Daft Punk - Da Funk
Here's a fantastic Daft Punk video. I had forgotten all about this video until I saw it mentioned in this Observer article about music videos. Although other videos, such as Thriller, had included scripted narratives before, I think this was the first video to go to the extent of making the actual track part of the background of a traditional narrative unrelated to the music, which I think is very clever and imaginative. I like the way the central character is forced to carry around a tape deck playing the title track, for a reason which cannot be explained within the story itself, and is only understandable in the context of the viewer who is aware that the film is a music video. The surrealness is added to by the fact that the character is a dog, and emphasised by the contrast between these bizarre elements and the detailed characterisation, reminiscent of a Woody Allen film.
